#MeanMom tackles laziness

Another installment of Mean Mom Mondays !

Okay this one I need some help with.  I have not figured out the right punishment to fit the crime.

The Crime - Laziness

We all succumb to laziness from time to time; but my children seem to grab onto it, hold it tight, and wallow in it.  Today I have a prime example for you !   Lucky you !!

This is our main bathroom. Mind you, we have 4.  One downstairs that is primarily Attitude King's and I don't go down there if I don't have to.  If you have a teenaged boy, you understand!  One is upstairs which is mainly what the girls use for getting ready in the mornings or at bedtime.  One is my master bathroom which NO ONE but me is allowed to use- okay, I let Daddy Chaos use it, but under protest!  Lastly we have this bathroom (this is obviously not the entire bathroom but it's what counts for my point- which I will come to eventually) which is located just off the living room. This is the bathroom that sees the most traffic from all the kids.

Now I would like to point out my attempts to deter laziness.  Do you see the cute toilet paper holder sitting there in the corner?   Now do you notice that it is completely full of toilet paper?   Slowly track your eyes to the left.  BOOM! There it is!  The empty toilet paper roll!!  WHY??

All except the smallest boys can sit on that toilet, use the end of the toilet paper , r e a c h over and grab a fresh roll to put on - all without getting up. So WHY is it empty?

Nothing peeves my pickle more than this type of laziness.   Now I admit I am a little neurotic on how the toilet paper goes onto the roll and I have been known to yell when it's on wrong.

The point here is - everyone knows the appropriate way to put toilet paper on the roll.  There have been drills, there have been tests.  It is knowledge that is ingrained into their tiny brains.

And they all know WHY we put the toilet paper on the correct way :

So we can't even use that as an excuse.   And so I must concede that it is just pure laziness on the part of my children that leaves me with an empty toilet paper roll  in this situation.  Now, of course, I changed it and put a full roll on ... but I'm half tempted to change it back before they get home just to see exactly how long it will take one of them to change it.

I'm pretty sure I need this little reminder and maybe , just maybe it will help?

What do you do to cure chronic laziness in your kids?

#Review - a #LeapReader "Ready, Set, Read & Write " party courtesy of @LeapFrog

I was thrilled to be chosen to host a party introducing LeapFrog's newest invention- the LeapReader!    I have always been a big fan of LeapFrog who seems to know just how to make learning fun :)

Let me tell you a little bit about the LeapReader ..

The LeapReader is a complete "learn to read and write" system that combines the three essential literacy skills : Reading, Writing and Listening.   By practicing them together, children can practice the skills they need to help them become confident independent readers.

Learn to Read-  you simply touch the LeapReader to any page to sound out words letter by letter, read sentences in lively character voices and play fun games that build comprehension.  * I have a few kiddos who struggle with comprehension, so I love that fact!

Learn to Write -  Use the LeapReader to trace letters and numbers, and write words stroke-by-stroke with interactive guidance as magic ink appears on special mess-free paper.   * All the moms loved the writing feature- it prompts you on writing letters, notices when you life your pencil and shouldn't and sounds out words when you have finished one!  Love!

Learn through Listening -  Develop listening skills, comprehension and imagination with LeapReader's popular audio books, trivia challenges and learning songs!  * We are big LeapFrog fans and own several (most) of the movies.  When we tried listening to some of the songs- my kids were happy to sing and dance along.

Now onto the party and some pictures!

Naturally I invited several friends with their kids over to play with the huge box of stuff that LeapFrog provided for us!  *Note, not all were comfortable sharing photos of their children on the internet so you will just see my kids and MsRandom's kiddos.

Although I received the products well in advance, I didn't open them for my own children to play with until the party because I wanted them to experience it like the rest of the party goers.   I will say that when the kids first got there, I sent them off to play as I was still setting things up.  Several times, different kiddos would come over to ask me what was on the table and if they could please play with it yet! lol!

Finally it was time to begin!  I'm not sure who was more excited, the moms or the kids?!

They all happily donned their 3D glasses.  I think everyone's first choice of books to look at was the 3D Monsters University!   We looked thru the book and then flipped to the back to work on some Nouns / Verbs action!

The LeapReader would tell the kids to pick nouns or verbs (Nouns were in yellow, verbs in red).  I loved that it had two different levels - level 1 for the little kids reminded them that nouns were on the yellow page vs  verbs on the red page,  level 2 for the older kids would just ask them to pick a noun/verb without prompting.  Everyone loved this game and couldn't wait for their turn!   Dimples only had problems keeping his glasses on.. lol. Momma had to help hold them on for him : )

Next we all sat together and did "Tad's Song".  In this game, there are missing parts to the song along with a box to choose from.  We had to pick a word (Dimple's had control of the LeapReader) and then decide which word rhymed with our word.  At the end, we were able to listen to the song we helped Tad create! :)

And finally they were all turned loose (taking turns of course) with the LeapReaders to practice some writing.  Dimples & Banana - the youngest of the pictured crew (both being 5) enjoyed tracing words.  The moms all loved that if you stayed on the lines there was a sound - an encouragement that you were doing it right.  If you lifted your pencil up off the paper when you shouldn't (ahem.  Dimples.)  we were alerted to keep our pencil down, don't lift it.  When each letter was finished , the letter was said and at the end of the word- the Leapreader sounded out the word the kids had just traced.   It was beyond amazing!

Honestly, there was so much more to do- we ran out of time before we could do all we wanted!  One lucky winner took home a LeapReader set, while we kept one set for ourselves (my kids are thrilled!).

I took a poll of Moms & kids and here are what we thought were the pros and cons :

Pros

  •  No batteries to buy - you simply plug it in and recharge.
  • Large variety of books and even a large variety of stuff to do within each book.
  • The Learn to Write books were thick enough that we could easily set the practice paper in it and not worry about messing up anything.

Cons

  • Practice paper-  the only con we could come up with (other than not having one system for each kid.. ha!) was that we wish the practice paper /writing were made differently so that it could be erased vs using once and throwing away (think of it like receipt paper, there is no actual lead but you write by making pressure with the LeapReader).
When the kids were asked their favorite parts of the party / LeapReader they said :

  • Writing
  • Listening to the audio books
  • Rhyming
  • The T-Rex story  ( which we listened to as an audio book)
  • Stories & Writing
  • Writing & Telephone game  (we lined everyone up, let one child listen to part of a story with headphones on and then stopped the story.  Then played the old game telephone of having the first child tell the last word they heard and everyone whispering it down the line.  They were all amused at how changed the words became at the end! lol!   Our closest was Dinoko to Diamond..)

All in all , it was a great opportunity!  With a larger group of children in various ages (5 -9), not once did we have anyone wandering off or acting bored!   I'm highly recommending this one if you have any children in need of a little help with reading or writing!   I am definitely putting more books and accessories down on my Christmas list to buy for the kids!

*Disclosure - I received free LeapFrog products in order to host the LeapFrog sponsored MommyParty.  The opinions expressed here are my own. *

Summer Vacation here and gone..

Can you believe summer is almost over already?  We've been busy and I've been neglecting you.. Don't worry, once school starts you won't be able to get rid of me.  You'll be begging me to quit writing and leave you alone already!  We start back to school in 25 days...  Eek!  I'm not sure I'm ready yet...

Dimples will be going to kindergarten (full day) this year.  With no extra help.   Apparently he did pretty darn well towards the end of preschool (yay!) and they decided that other than speech, he was good to go.   Now that's all good and great, if I believed it.   The boy can hold it together for the 2 hours he was at preschool.  Now 8 hours of regular school ?  HA..  At his 5yr old appt, I mentioned to his pediatrician (a man I love completely) and he asked how I felt about it.. When I laughed, he nodded and agreed-  It won't take them long to realize he needs help in place - was his comment.

My mom sent me this on FB -- YES this is Dimples 100%.. lol.  Not only am I worried about how he's going to do in class, but lunch.  The boy doesn't eat and when he does it is normally at a snails pace.  This is at home, at the table where no one looks at him or talks (he will scream).. So I'm wondering how lunch is going to work in a crowded cafeteria where he has to choose his own food, carry his own tray and be expected to eat within 20 mins.   Yeah, I have worries.

On the other hand,  Fishing Pole did some summer school time this year for his reading.  He made such a vast improvement!  It was amazing!  He did wonderful during summer school- I'm not really sure if it's the smaller class (8kids vs 22 kids), meds helping, or if it's just due to him being in a better frame of mind.  Regardless, it was nice for him to not get in trouble for behaviour and actually get to earn prizes for GOOD behaviour!!   Woohoo Fishing Pole!!

The other kids, I'm not worried about.  Spoiled Princess really likes school and does really well.   Southern Darlin' has lots of help in place and is finally learning how to make friends.   Attitude King is excited about the opportunities this high school offers compared to our old one.  He's taking Latin this year.  I can speak pig latin, does that count?    Lastly, Drama Queen will be entering her senior year.  The past few months have been all about college hunting, senior trip planning and basically being reminded on a weekly basis that she's  "outta here" in a year.

Life moves too fast sometimes...

Another year...

The first day of school has come and gone.

The kids are all a grade older and I only have one year left before Dimples will be in Kindergarten which means ALL DAY school.  :(

I'd like to share our first day of school picture like I always have in the past.. Alas, the "highschoolers" have deemed themselves all of the sudden too big to pose.  Silly teens.  So here are the lil kids :

And because I'm that mom. I went outside and hollared at the highschoolers to walk their little butts back home so I could get their picture as they tried to sneak out of the house before I could capture them ..

I quite frankly, have no idea how on earth Attitude King has gotten so big. A FRESHMAN people. The clock is ticking down :(  This boy, who once was so little, I now have to look up at as he towers over me.  Heck, he towers of Daddy Chaos too.. lol.

And Drama Queen, the junior, who is constantly wishing her life away and trying to be older than she is.  I don't know when she grew up either, I must have blinked.  Sorry for the fuzzy picture, they were by the road.. Please note that I was nice enough to crop her BFF out of the picture, even though said BFF huffed at the mere idea of getting a "first day of school" picture which means I promptly put it on facebook uncropped.. :~P

So school has started and life is getting back into a routine.  Sigh.   I think this is the first year I have ever looked forward to school starting.  The summer has been a shitfest of surgeries, pre-op appts, post- op appts and bedrest.  Back to school forces us back into a routine which I've come to realize it's not just the kids who crave it.

And because nothing good can come without a tiny bit of bad- Dimples has had his 3rd sinus infection of the year.  Our Dr decided to run some allergy tests- low and behold, the boy has a milk allergy.

Let me restate that- the boy whose pure existence is due to Boost (milk included), grilled cheese sandwiches and quesadillas- is allergic to milk.   Our life has just become not so fun.

When I grow up...

In light of so many of my many little ones turning a year older, I thought I'd start a new annual post of what they want to be when they "grow up"..  It's fun to watch how things change over the years and why not jot it here where I won't lose it :)

When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a mom.  That was my goal.  I was planning on having 10-20 kids, the number seemed to vary over the years but A LOT anyway.   I guess I kinda got my wish at 6 !  When I was pushed to be more professional - who's just a mom in this day and age? You need a CAREER.. I went with elementary teacher for a while (Thank the good Lord above that wish never came to fruition because O.M.Gawd I would have killed me some little kids.  I love my own kids madly but can't stand other people's.  No clue why, it's a mystery.) and for a brief stint in high school I was all for becoming an accountant.

God I was/am a geek.   Numbers still enthrall me.  There's just something relaxing about balancing a checkbook- as long as it's not my own.. Hmm, opposite of the kid thing..

Anyhoo, as we all know- I amounted to nothing more than a mom.  My career track cut short when I skipped college to have a kid. Which some people will say was a failure.  I say I got exactly what I wanted (although some days I might wish for a calculator and quite office) and apparently I was smart enough to know it from the time I could talk =)

So enough about me- let's move onto the munchkins..

Drama Queen (age 15) - immediately says Doctor.  When pressed to be more precise- Obstetrician is her answer (and has been for a few years now) because she only delivers the child and doesn't have to deal with them past that!    *I'd like to break in to say that prior to the whole MD thing, Drama Queen has always (since the time she could talk) wanted to be an actress/singer.   We shall see if it plays out like my life did..

Attitude King (age 13) - *laughs nervously* and after much thought says " I dunno".  When pressured, he randomly throws out  CIA agent or in the Army  Navy (I can't stand to fly anywhere.. my ears pop & hurt too bad.. and if I'm in the Navy I can just ride the ship, right?).  I hate to tell him but we be an Air Force family so it's gonna have to be that or nothing- Momma votes for nothing & staying safe at home forever!

Southern Darlin' (age 7) - A princess because they are soo pretty. Or a Mom! A princess is an improvement, she used to claim that she wanted to be a bus driver..

Spoiled Princess (age 6) -
a cowgirl!! I want to be a fairy but if I can't be a fairy then I want to be a cowgirl! Yeehaw!!  Or I want to be a princess!!

Fishing Pole (age 5) -  always responds with either A Dinosaur!  A Shark!!  or the most recent A Sea Turtle!!

TheToddler (age- almost 3)-   Ok well TheToddler doesn't really talk much yet so I can't exactly ask him what he wants to be.. From what we know about him, we pretty much all have him being our Famous athlete.. Probably baseball, possibly soccer or football.   Have I mentioned that he chipped my windshield by throwing a bakagaun  ball at it from his carseat?  The boy has an arm on him!
